CBD 101

CBD stands for cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is a naturally occurring component of industrial hemp/cannabis, and is defined as “a cannabinoid devoid of psychoactive effect” according to the US Government.

CBD oil is a type of cannabis oil that contains significant amounts of cannabidiol (CBD), but there are several additional terms that can be used to describe the CBD derived from industrial hemp that we use in our extracts and products, including CBD-rich hemp oil, hemp derived CBD oil, CBD-rich cannabis oil, or even simply “hemp extracts” as the extract we use typically contains many more benefits than just CBD.

The difference between Hemp and Marijuana is the level of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) contained within the plant. Both are classified as “Cannabis Sativa,” but Hemp and Marijuana are distinct strains with a very different genetic profile. Industrial hemp has been bred to have a low THC profile compared to the marijuana form of Cannabis sativa, and higher concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), which medical research has found to help manage stress, anxiety, pain, inflammation, brain health, and many diseases.

Marijuana strains of cannabis sativa will be smaller, bushier, with flowering buds and have a high psychoactive Δ9 THC profile. 99% of the time marijuana has a high amount of Δ9 THC and a very low amount of CBD.

Hemp on the other hand has a very high amount of CBD, and in most instances only carries a trace amount of Δ9 THC. The cannabinoid profile of hemp is ideal for people who are seeking the health benefits from cannabis without the psychoactive profile (or the ‘high’ as some would call it).

From a legal perspective, the definition of “industrial hemp” in the USA as per Section 7606 of the Agricultural Appropriations Act of 2014 is as follows: “The term ‘‘industrial hemp’’ means the plant Cannabis sativa L. and any part of such plant, whether growing or not, with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9 THC) concentration of no more than 0.3 percent on a dry weight basis.”

Industrial hemp is always a strain of Cannabis sativa, whereas marijuana can be either Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, or Cannabis ruderalis.

In recent years, most marijuana plants have been genetically modified to create species that produce extraordinary amounts of THC that cause extremely intense psychoactive experiences. Although some companies have started to genetically modify Hemp, this industrial plant has remained the same for over 10,000 years. Alivio only uses products produced from reliable Hemp farmers that are committed to growing strictly “original hemp” that is pure and grown organically.

Historically, hemp has been grown specifically for industrial use. Not only is it one of the fastest growing weeds, it was also one of the first plants to be spun into usable fiber. It can be refined into a variety of commercial items including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, animal feed, and now medicine.

Alivio’s Whole Plant Hemp Extract contains over 80 different phytocannabinoids such as CBD, CBC, CBG, CBN, etc. It also includes many other types of natural molecules and phytochemical compounds such as amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins (including B1, B2, B6, D), fatty acids (including omega 3 & 6), trace minerals (including iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, potassium), beta-carotene, chlorophyll, flavonoids, ketones, nitrogenous compounds, alkanes, glycosides and terpenes.

Yes. CBD is CBD, whether from marijuana or hemp.

We have partners in Kentucky who grow industrial hemp and process our Whole Plant Hemp Extract while remaining 100% compliant with Section 760 of the 2014 Farm Bill (and the 2016 Agricultural Appropriations Act).

Our Whole Plant Hemp Extract products have varying percentages of cannabidiol (CBD) content. Each product has a unique formulation and uses varying ratios of CBD to ensure the best usage/dosage and results. †

Alivio 900mg Hemp Oil Tincture contains at least 900mg of CBD per bottle (approximately 1mg per drop / 25mg per full dropper).

Begin with a low dose especially if you have little or no experience with CBDs.
Take a few small doses over the course of the day rather than one big dose.
Use the same dose for several days. Observe the effects and if necessary adjust the amount.
Don’t overdo it. “Less is more” is often the case with Hemp CBD oils.
Consult your physician. Proceed cautiously, especially if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, mental illness, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Yes. CBD inhibits the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which is involved in metabolizing many drugs. Compounds in grapefruit inhibit the same enzyme group, which is why physicians advise patients not to eat grapefruit shortly before or after taking a medication. By inhibiting cytochrome P450, CBD can either reduce or increase the effects of other drugs. Consult with your physician before using any Hemp extract products.

Using unusually large doses of a cannabinoid-rich hemp oil product (above 1000-2000mg of hemp oil daily) could test positive during the initial urinary screen. However, drug tests are geared toward identifying Δ9 THC, not CBD or other cannabinoids. If you use a CBD product that has a trace amount of Δ9 THC, the Δ9 THC could register on the drug test, but it’s unlikely.

According to Quest Diagnostics, “If the product contains only CBD and has had the THC removed, then an individual being tested would not be expected to test positive for marijuana or marijuana metabolite.”

Simply put, if Hemp CBD is used in unusually high doses on a regular basis, it is possible that traces of Δ9 THC metabolites could show on a drug test. This is highly unlikely, but still possible.

No. Standard hemp seed oil, which can be found at a grocery store, is a much different product than our hemp extracts (which are not made from the seed). Standard hemp seed oil is produced by cold pressing the seeds, whereas our hemp extract is an extraction of the hemp plant itself. Hemp seed oil is considered to be a great nutritive food, but it doesn’t have the naturally occurring terpenes, cannabinoids, and other components that our hemp extracts contain.

No. Our Hemp is legal to sell in all 50 states via the 2014 Farm Bill and our authorized supplier as it contains less than .3% THC and U.S. Federal law permits us to ship straight to your door. Our products can be ordered and shipped to all fifty states.

Many people are under the impression that the only way to acquire hemp extracts and CBD is to move to Colorado or another cannabis-friendly state, but thankfully that is not the case. Since our extracts come from hemp instead of marijuana, and no medical marijuana card is needed.

We have third party laboratories analyze all our hemp extracts and our final products for cannabinoid potency, terpenes, heavy metals, bacterial and microbial life, mycotoxins (fungus), and pesticides.

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a group of internal cannabinoid receptors located in the brain and throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems that play a significant role in keeping our bodies balanced through a process called homeostasis. The ECS is involved in regulating a variety of physiological and cognitive processes including appetite, pain-sensation, mood, and memory, and in mediating some of the physiological and cognitive effects of physical exercise.

The three key components of the ECS are:

Cannabinoid receptors: found on the surface of cells
Endocannabinoids: small molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors
Metabolic enzymes: enzymes that break down endocannabinoids after they are used
